북미 경매사이트인 이베이(EBay)에 온라인 PC 게임 유통시스템 '스팀'의 본인 계정을 미화 1,000 달러(한화 112만원 상당)에 판매한다는 글이 올라와 게이머들 사이에서 화제가 되고 있다.
스팀에서 일정 금액을 지불하고 PC 게임을 구입하게 되면, 해당 게임은 구입한 사람의 계정에 귀속되며 온라인만 연결되어 있다면 언제 어디서나 스팀 클라이언트를 통해 다운로드 받을 수 있게 된다.
이베이에 스팀 계정을 올린 dave311freak라는 게이머는 지금까지 총 139개의 PC게임을 구입해 왔고, 이를 현재 판매가로 환산하게 되면 미화 2,700 달러(한화 300만원 상당)에 달한다. 게임 하나 당 평균 10시간의 플레이 시간이 소요된다고 가정하면 총 1390 시간, 즉 58일 동안 잠시도 쉬지 않고 플레이해야 다 즐길 수 있는 양이다.
리스트를 살펴보면 퀘이크1, 하프라이프1 등의 고전 명작을 비롯하여 콜오브듀티: 모던워페어2, 드래곤에이지: 오리진, 레프트4데드, 보더랜드 등 출시한지 얼마 지나지 않은 최신 대작까지 총망라되어 있음을 알 수 있다.
dave311freak는 이베이에 올린 경매글의 본문을 통해 "지금까지 너무 많은 시간을 비디오게임을 플레이하는데 소비해왔다. 앞으로는 더 많은 시간을 가족과 함께 하거나, 다른 취미 생활을 즐기기 위해 스팀 계정을 판매하려고 한다."는 이유까지 밝혔다.
이 기사를 작성하는 기자 또한 비싼 금액만 아니라면 구미가 당길만큼, 해당 계정의 향방에 북미 게이머들의 관심이 쏠리고 있는데, 현재 익명의 누군가에 의해서 즉시구매가 1,000달러에 팔리면서 경매가 종료됐지만, 실제로 경매 대금이 지불되고 정상적으로 거래가 완료됐다는 제보는 없는 상황이다.
