Some of the fiercest combat ever seen occurred on the morning of June 6th, 1944. On this day, thousands of brave soldiers from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Poland and Canada (to name a few), stormed the beaches of Normandy, France. Opposing them was the mighty Atlantic Wall, a complicated and extensive set of coastal fortifications manned by dug-in German units with the sole purpose of stopping whatever came from the beach. Supported by an overnight airborne operation and a relentless bombing campaign from air and naval forces, Operation Overlord commenced, and would forever change the scope of the Second World War.

1944년 6월 6일 아침, 미국, 영국, 프랑스, 폴란드, 캐나다 등 각국에서 파병된 수천명의 용맹한 병사들이 프랑스 노르망디 해안에서 역사상 가장 참혹한 전투 중 하나를 치루었습니다. 밀물처럼 밀려오는 그들을 맞이하는건 다름 아닌 대자연의 절벽과 접근하는 모든 것을 무력화시킬 수 있는 독일군의 복잡하고 거대한 대규모 방어시설이었습니다. 밤을 새워 지속된 공수부대와 끊임없는 포격 지원을 필두로, 제 2차 세계대전의 척도를 영원히 바꿀 작전명 오버로드가 이 날 시작되었습니다.

Once a serene coastline, Normandy was slowly built up with concrete emplacements, to later be the scene of a devastating combat zone. This historical battlefield comes to life in World of Tanks soon!

노르망디는 평온한 해안에서 시작하여, 점점 나아 갈 수록 콘크리트 구조물이 나타나며 마지막에는 충격적인 전장의 모습이 나타납니다. 이 역사적인 전장이 월드 오브 탱크에 곧 추가될 예정입니다.


 


The first thing you'll notice about Overlord is its impressive size of 1,000 x 1,000. You'll need to pay close attention to your minimap to be able to assess the situation as it unfolds on the field. Overlord can best be described as a mixture of maps; lots of open space to maneuver, destructible rural buildings for a moment's rest, a coast and static defenses all litter the battlefield. Will you take the high ground and take a stand? The possibilities are open from the get-go, which way will you go?

우선 주목할 점은 1000 x 1000 크기의 지도라는 점입니다. 항상 미니맵을 주시하며 전장을 판단해야 합니다. 이 지도는 기존의 전술적 요소가 모두 들어있습니다: 개활지, 농촌 건물, 튼튼한 콘크리트 구조물까지. 전장에서 우위를 점하고 싶다면, 가능성은 모두 열려있습니다. 어느 곳으로 갈지 직접 선택하십시오.

 



The reason Overlord seems so lifelike is because an actual Normandy landing site was used as an inspiration. The map itself resembles the battlefield as it was on that fateful June 7th, when Allied forces had already successfully landed and were on the verge of a breakthrough from the beach. The battlefield is scarred with marks of the battle ranging from burnt out Shermans and Panzer IVs, to damaged bunkers and homes.

오버로드 지도가 몹시 현실적으로 보이는 이유는 노르망디 상륙작전이 성공적으로 끝나고 난 뒤인 1944년 7월 7일, 셔먼과 4호전차의 교전이 발생해 인근의 방어시설과 민가가 파괴된 날을 기준으로 하기 때문입니다.


 


This map introduces multiple unique objects including new bunkers and pillboxes, detached homes and an iconic church modeled from Sainte-Mère-Église. You'll find the once peaceful town to the east filled with trenches, anti-tank guns, craters and more.

이 지도는 여러가지 독특한 요소들이 많습니다. 예컨데 새로운 벙커와 진지들, 단독주택들과 상징적인 Sainte-Mère-Église 교회, 동쪽의 평화로운 마을에서부터 참호, 대전차화기, 폭발로 생긴 구덩이로 이어지는 풍경 등등.

The actual Normandy beaches were covered with numerous anti-tank traps like Czech hedgehogs and Rommel's asparagus. These obstacles were removed from Overlord to allow the beach region to be playable. Whichever direction you decide to go, the battle is sure to follow.

실제 노르망디 해안은 Czech hedgehogs 와 Rommel's asparagus 같은 대전차 장애물로 가득 뒤덮여 있었지만, 게임에선 플레이가 가능하게 어느정도 제거될 예정입니다. 가고싶은 곳을 정했다면 쉽게 갈 수 있습니다.

Rommel's asparagus


Vehicles equipped with above average gun-depression must take advantage of the rough, battle-torn terrain to fire away at unsuspecting foes. The battlefield is also filled with indestructible fortifications, so your peek-a-boo and sidescraping tactics will be put to the test. There's no question that Overlord has traits for all vehicle classes. Which way will you go?
