더 게임 어워드 측은 한국 시각으로 14일 더 게임 어워드2023(The Game Awards, 이하 TGA2023)의 시상 부문 후보작을 공개했다. 가장 높은 자리에서 게임의 우수성을 가리는 올해의 게임 후보에는 라리안 스튜디오의 발더스 게이트3, 인섬니악 게임즈의 마블 스파이더맨2, 캡콤의 바이오 하자드 RE:4, 레메디 엔터테인먼트의 앨런 웨이크2, 그리고 닌텐도의 슈퍼 마리오 브라더스 원더와 젤다의 전설: 티어스 오브 더 킹덤이 각각 후보에 올랐다.
가장 눈여겨볼 작품은 단연 발더스 게이트3와 앨런 웨이크2다. 발더스 게이트3는 베스트 게임 디렉션, 베스트 내러티브, 베스트 스코어 앤 뮤직(음악 부문), 베스트 커뮤니티 서포트, 베스트 RPG, 베스트 멀티플레이어, 그리고 아스테리온 역의 닐 뉴본이 베스트 퍼포머(연기 부문) 후보에 올랐다. 앨런 웨이크2 역시 베스트 게임 디렉션, 베스트 내러티브, 베스트 아트 디렉션, 베스트 스코어 앤 뮤직, 베스트 오디오 디자인, 베스트 액션/어드벤처 게임, 사가 앤더슨 역의 멜라니 리버드가 베스트 퍼포머에 후보를 냈다.
두 게임 모두 올해의 게임을 포함해 8개 부문으로 TGA2023 최다 부분 노미네이트 작품으로 이름을 올렸다. 또한, 게임 디렉션, 내러티브, 음악 부문, 연기 부문 등에서 수상을 두고 경쟁하게 됐다.
올해 더 게임 어워드에는 총 112개의 게임, 개인, 팀, 이벤트 등이 후보에 올랐으며 닌텐도가 15개, 소니 인터랙티브 엔터테인먼트가 13개, 베데스다와 블리자드를 포함한 Xbox가 10개, 서드 파티 퍼블리셔 에픽 게임즈가 9개 부문에 각각 후보를 냈다.
또한, 2022년 신설되어 게임을 넘어 다양한 작품 수상으로의 확대를 그린 베스트 어뎁테이션(각색 부문)에는 캐슬바니아: 녹턴, 그란 투리스모, 라스트 오브 어스, 슈퍼 마리오 브라더스 무비, 트위스티드 메탈 등 다양한 게임 원작 드라마, 영화, 애니메이션이 노미테이트됐다.
더 게임 어워드는 한국시각으로 12월 8일 오전 9시 반부터 유튜브, 트위치, 스팀, 페이스북, 틱톡 라이브, X 등 다양한 온라인 채널을 통해 시상식이 중계될 예정이다.
TGA는 전신인 스파이크 비디오 게임 어워드를 포함, 골든 조이스틱 어워드, BAFTA 어워드, GDC 어워드 D.I.C.E. 어워드 등과 함께 오랜 역사와 높은 권위를 자랑하는 시상식이다. 비교적 이른 시기 진행된 골든 조이스틱 어워드에서는 발더스 게이트3가 총 7관왕에 오르는 기염을 토한 가운데 TGA에서는 두 작품이 다 부문에서 맞붙는다.
