A  very heavy tank designed in the Fifties, when the primary threat was hordes of Soviet armour pouring out of East Germany, she was built as a direct response to the appearance of the Soviet IS-3 (Josef Stalin) tank and its successor the T-10. Both were seen in a Victory parade in Berlin and the western powers knew that at the time, they outclassed anything they had, at this point Stalin was already being a bit of a knob, and the western governments realized that in order to keep the soviets from getting a little to pushy, they had to match like for like.

To do this the designers turned to the prototypes they had under development and selected the core from the A45 Infantry Support Tank, which was started about 1944, shortly after the Centurion was started., the Project at the time as for the Universal Tank FV200 a vehicle that would have 1 hull, but able to be converted into TD or Arty, with a few tweaks here and there (I will cover the Fearsome Conway and others tomorrow)

이를 위해서 개발자들은 현재 개발 중이던 프로토타입을 꺼내기로 했고 Centurion 개발 시작 직후인 1944년쯤 개발이 시작되었던 A45 보병지원전차에서 핵심을 가져옵니다. 당시에는 그 프로젝트가 Universal Tank FV200이었는데 이 차량은 한 차량에서 여기저기 조금씩만 손봐서 구축전차가 자주포로 변환이 가능하도록 만들어졌습니다. (무시무시한 Conway 전차와 다른 것들은 내일 다루기로 합시다.)

The MOD, then known as the War Office wanted a heavy tank with a gun big enough to penetrate the Russian armour and calculated that 120mm was the minimum required for the Job.

전쟁성이라고도 불리던 영국 국방부는 러시아 기갑을 관통시키기에 충분히 큰 포를 가진 중전차를 원했고, 이 목적의 달성을 위해 최소 120mm 주포가 필요하다는 결론을 내렸습니다.

Due to engineering restriction and materials available at the time, any tank carrying a Gun of this size would be very large indeed, this wasn’t helped by the fact the vehicle needed armour capable of stopping any Russian gun equipped at the time. The design brief stated the armour had to stop a soviet 122mm round at any range from the front, and this was accomplished at the cost of increased weight.
Conqueror started to enter service in 1955 and was issued on a limited scale to armoured regiments equipped with Centurion.

Conqueror는 1955년에 운용을 시작하였고 Centurion으로 무장한 기갑연대에 제한적인 규모로 보급되었습니다.

The centurion was to act as the exploitation tank, and MBT, the heavies were to either make a strong breakthrough at a point, or to hold a certain spot under heavy barrage and fire, until either Airpower to tactical control had been gained, or they had been knocked out by fire, The crew of the heavies knew that they would be thrown in to ugliest fights, and did not have the mobility to quickly pull back if required it took a stern and brave crew to man the Conquers.

Conqueror was powered by a fuel-injected version of the Meteor engine, the Rolls Royce Meteor M 120 810 Php 24 litre engine gave ample power, but if this is not tier 10, expect to have a 2 a Leyland Engines instead ( How this failure of a company kept getting contacts has bemused me for years )

Power was driven through the regular Merritt-Brown transmission. A recipe that has worked since about 1943 and was tried and tested It employed a Horstmann type suspension system with resilient, steel-rimmed road wheels that made it very noisy on the move, but if heavy tanks were to be deployed, then subtly has already gone out of the window.

출력은 일반적인 Merritt-Brown 변속기를 통해 전달되었습니다. 1943년부터 시도되고 실험되었던 방법인데, Horstmann 형식의 탄력성 있는 서스펜션 시스템과 기동시 매우 시끄러운 강철테를 두른 보기륜을 태용했습니다. 그러나 중전차가 배치된다면 어차피 정숙성은 내다 버리는 것이 되는 셈이니까요.
The small road wheels are a defining characteristic of the Conquers, most Brit MBT’s can be seen to have followed a clear line from the Crusader to the Challenger, with 5 and then 6 Large road wheels, but as speed and comfort were not required for this vehicle, the smaller but stronger suspension was used.

대부분의 영국 MBT들은 Crusader부터 Challenger까지 5개나 6개의 커다란 보기륜을 쓰는 것으로 구분될 수 있었는데, (역주: 그와 달리) 작은 보기륜은 Conqueror의 주요 특징 중 하나입니다. 그러나 속도와 안락함은 이 차량에 필요가 없었기에 작지만 더 튼튼한 서스펜션을 사용했습니다.
As per usual it suffered the usual British issues of transmission, and the usual Brit issues of breaking down a lot, of you’ve read my previous posts you will see that I have covered this issue a fair bit, I myself have managed to destroy a Chieftain gearbox, and I wasn’t even trying. Ahem. Anyway one thing that will raise an eyebrow or two, is the fact that across softer ground the Conquer had better traction and mobility and was in fact faster than the centurion, you can be that’s not included either.

항상 그랬듯이 이 차량도 영국의 일반적인 서스펜션 문제를 겪었고 일반적인 영국 차량처럼 많이 망가지는 문제가 있었는데 제 이전 글들을 읽어보았다면 이 문제들을 꽤 다뤘었음을 알 수 있을겁니다. 저 자신도 의도치 않게 Chieftain의 기어박스를 날려먹은 적이 있었거든요. 흠흠... 어쨌든 좀 놀랄만한 사실 하나는 부드러운 지반을 지나갈 때 Conqueror는 더 좋은 견인력과 기동성을 얻을 수 있었고 실제로 Centurion보다 빨랐습니다만, 이것도 게임에는 포함되지 않을겁니다.

Its most interesting feature was the turret, a monstrous structure in cast steel which weighed 18.5 tons in its own right. The 120mm calibre was deemed appropriate for the design, and the search for a counter to soviet armour lead to the 120mm gun based on the American T53 gun.
Mounted in a new turret the L1A1/2 could be carried on a modified version of the FV201, christened the FV214.
가장 흥미로운 부분은 포탑입니다. 주조로 만들어진 괴물같은 구조물은 자체 중량이 18.5톤이었습니다. 120mm 구경 주포가 설계에 적합하리라고 여겨졌고, 소련의 장갑에 맞서기 위한 주포를 찾아보니 미국의 T53 주포에 기반을 둔 120mm 주포를 선택하게 됩니다.
Firing Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot (APDS) rounds at 1450 metres/sec, (4,700 feet/sec), the new gun could penetrate 220 mm (8.7in) of homogeneous steel armour sloped at 30 degrees at a range of 914 metres (1,000 yards). This performance should have been sufficient to penetrate the armour of both the IS III and its successor the T10, given that APDS was by then a standard round for taking on tanks Im not sure what they will do, most likely increase the basic AP to 220mm, and keep the APDS  rounds a boost to the 260mm mark? –

The same gun was fitted to the American M103 heavy tank and this made it easy to swap part over in a NATO fight (And you can bet they wont include that little feature in the game)

Although powerful it proved very hard work for the loader and this may well be reflected in the game, and I would suggest an gun rammer as essential, to make up for this it was fully stabilised for firing on the move. This is another advantage the Brit tanks have, and from Dev rumours, that Brit tanks are more accurate on the move, by this late stage your poor ROF will be compensated by the fact you can shoot fairly well at low speeds.

강력하기는 했지만 장전수에게는 굉장히 고된 일이었는데, 게임에 반영이 될지도 모르며 장전기를 기본으로 장착할 것을 제안하겠습니다. 그 대신에 기동간 사격에서는 완전히 안정화가 됩니다. 개발자들의 루머에 따르면 이건 영국 전차들의 또다른 장점이라고 하는데, 기동간 사격에서 더 정확하며, 이 늦은 단계에 오면 당신의 낮은 연사능력은 느린 속도에서도 꽤 잘 사격할 수 있다는 점으로 보상이 될 것이라 하는군요.

Historically one of Conqueror's best features was the commander's post, and was a feature that the Germans had been keen to implement in WW2 it was a separate rotating cupola at the rear of the turret with its own range-finder which enabled the commander to get an accurate sight on one target while the tank was dealing with another, whether this is include in the game is not known, as the French TD’s have a range finder with only negative consequences attached I would expect the  Conqueror to be burdened the same way.

역사적으로 Conqueror 최고의 기능 중 하나는 전차장 관측창으로써 독일인들이 2차 대전 당시에 그렇게 써보려고 했던 것인데 포탑 뒤쪽에 독립적으로 돌아가는 큐폴라가 있고 자체 거리측정기가 있어 전차가 다른 목표와 교전 중일때도 전차장은 원하는 또다른 목표를 더 정확하게 관측할 수 있었습니다. 게임에 이게 도입될지는 모르겠지만 프랑스 구축전차의 거리측정기가 오로지 나쁜 물건이 되어버린 것처럼 Conqueror도 같은 식으로 단점을 얻어갈 것이라 예상해봅니다.
She remained in service until 1966 when it was replaced by Chieftain. It was the heaviest tank ever to serve with the British Army!

1966년에 Chieftain으로 대체되기 전까지 운용되었습니다. 영국 육군이 도입한 가장 무거운 전차였죠.
the 120 mm Gun fired separate ammunition and spent cases were automatically ejected outside vehicle, it is not known if this will be added as a separate animation

120mm 주포는 분리탄약을 사용했으며 사용한 탄피는 자동으로 전차 밖으로 배출됩니다. 이게 별도의 애니메이션으로 게임에 도입될지는 모르겠습니다.

Pros and Cons
장단점

Pros: Heavy armour at 170mm then sloped to 60 degrees we can see the armour from a front t on shot travelling horizontally would need to pen over 290 armour (this is fairly easy to rough figure out however the actual calculation for shot damage is using the De Marre fomula)
The frontal turret amour is also near to 180+ and has very bouncy angles and curves, the lower nose like all modern British tanks is also a strong spot.
The 120 Gun is more than capable of penning any other tier 10, if your shots are fired with skill, aim for good areas etc, and the round has a very high velocity which gives it a bit of ooooph.
Mobility isn’t bad, and given its issues as above, you would expect it to have poor acceleration but good top speed ( for a heavy ) and better than average cross country performance.

장점: 170mm 60도 경사의 중장갑으로, 전면에서 수평으로 사격시 290mm 이상의 관통력을 요구함 (단순히 예상하기에는 꽤 쉽지만 실제 사격으로 인한 피해 계산은 De Marre 공식을 이용해야 합니다.)

포탑 전면장갑 또한 거의 180mm 이상이며 굉장히 깊은 도탄각과 곡선으로 이루어져있습니다. 아래의 코부분은 모든 현대 영국전차의 장갑이 강한 부분이기도 합니다.
120mm 주포는 만약 당신이 사격실력이 좋고 좋은 위치를 조준한다면 어떤 10티어를 상대로도 관통을 장담할 수 있습니다. 그리고 탄속이 좋아서 약-간의 장점을 주겠죠.

기동성은 나쁘지 않고, 문제점은 위에서도 적었습니다. 가속은 나쁘지만 (중전차로서의) 최고속력은 좋고, 야지 기동 성능도 평균 이상일 것이라 예상해봅니다.

Cons: Well I woudnt expect you too have the 120mm stock even if you own a M103,so be prepared for a grind, secondly your stating engines are very unlikley to good at the start, and when it comes to bad, think Leyland, finally that big turret while accurate may have a slower traverse than wished for and while this is very accurate for a heavy, I think dispersion or aim time may be fiddled with.
Still this is going to be a Fun Heavy tank even if it does end up Tier 9.

단점: 글쎄, 제가 보기엔 당신이 M103을 가지고 있어도 120mm가 기본 주포가 될지는 모르겠으니 노가다 뛸 준비를 하시길 바랍니다. 그리고 Leyland같이 안좋게 나온다면 처음에는 엔진이 그다지 좋을 것 같지 않습니다. 마지막으로 저 큰 포탑은 정확할지는 모르지만 예상보다 느리게 돌아갈지도 모르고, 중전차치고는 매우 정확할지도 모르지만 조준원 분산이나 조준시간에 손을 댈 수도 있습니다.

9티어로 들어간다고 해도 재밌는 중전차가 될겁니다.
